Keep a happy face

My Truck has broke down once again and I looked online for an answer about the problem right after I took it to pepboys and I’m glad I took it in immediately! According to aa1car.com it might be a BIG engine problem that I am especially not geared to deal with and not ready to pay for, meaning this might be the last time I have a big problem with it or still be a nuisance to me for a few more years.

Any time that I have tried to look into a problem I seem to find the most expensive solution online then go in ready for it, this time the oil pressure was down 2 days after getting my oil changed! So it might be an engine problem or they might have put something on loose and it came even more loose after I left and drove it around. Why  do I keep a car that is having problem after problem? Well it might stem from my dads drive it till it dies mentality (which in Michigan meant 10 years at most for general cars) or it might be that I have $500 to fix it but I don’t have
$7000-$10000 to buy a new truck, I’ve seen one with $18,000 listing price and one of the mirrors were broken and he’s constantly working on it! (I know, I am completely overusing exclamation points)  Either way my ’92 Sonoma has over $2000 in labor and parts cost in it and according to bluebook it is worth about $1,800 I really hope that no one crashes into me otherwise I am completely screwed because there is no way I can keep up with the repair bills I’ve been getting and getting a new car because someone totals mine (which happened to my 2002 Ford Escape last year.

I really hope that I will spend less than a newer used car would cost to keep this truck running but I am getting skeptical at this point.

Google: We compete with ourselves

Google is a great and large company that spans many businesses that compete with each other. One notable one that is most interesting is that they bought Motorola and still have the Nexus brand devices made by Samsung. Companies that compete with themselves are few because many companies aren’t large enough, for instance, Microsoft also has competing brands but only in a few areas: Microsoft office and Microsoft Works, both have strong features but Works is always the lower end so they aren’t really competing while Google has ChromeOS, which originally was pegged for tablets, and Android, which originally was only used on phones and very low end tablets. Both ChromeOS and Android are now being used on low end laptops and competing directly and ChromeOS is the better one for Laptop hardware but still Android is getting there as well.

So, why care about a big company competing with itself? I don’t it is just an interesting dynamic that is not used in all business’s but is a good solution to having arguments about who’s product is better if there is a fight about which way to go with an operating system or program. Also, as Microsoft has proved over and over again, it is a way to eliminate ideas constructively, I love Microsoft Encarta but when Bing came it was obsolete and could be disposed of, but instead of just outright getting rid of it they brought out the last edition and integrated it with Bing so it would still be somewhat useful in the age of “search and receive” instead of keeping the type of software that was dying they came out with a happy marriage that ended up Killing off Encarta but it still exists in disk drives in some places like my bedroom if not only for the Calculator program that was bundled with it the last year.  Hopefully Google will stop trying what is apparently not working and just try to integrate ChromeOS’s best features (such as the browser and having a tab button for google Docs) into Android and start merging them more to have one great Operating System instead of 2 competing ones that are good but browsing in Android s sometimes annoying and working offline in ChromeOS is near impossible. Just Merge them it’s doomed to happen even though I love ChromeOS I will not buy a laptop restricted to only work online when I can barely use my schools wifi to write this post.

Elementary OS Luna

I’ve been watching Elementary OS for the past year waiting for Luna and this past week I saw something that got me excited: the stable version of Jupiter has been taken off their website and a post that said farewell to Jupiter. I have been waiting for a while looking forward to a linux based operating system that is comparable with mac in the clean, integrated interface combined with the power that windows and linux operating systems which is why I am waiting patiently to see if they took out the power or if they just added some great features. A simple operating system is great but Mac won’t let me use theirs even if I pay them for it and windows has so many lagging features and high price that they drive me away.

I am currently running ubuntu 12.04 and cannot wait for 12.10 and luna. It will be epic!

I love my kindle fire

I got my kindle fire 1st gen for Christmas last year and love it other than some annoying battery problems it has been great but I cant help but think “what am I missing with the new software?” Well I can tell you that I’m missing an update which I do not appreciate. I mean the look and feel is one reason I bought this but another reason was I thought it would be SUPPORTED. I don’t mind if the new one gets a camera I am not buying a new one every year because it is not economical I already bought two kindles within two years so that I could have a color screen so why don’t they just at least update us to the latest version so that we aren’t living with paperweights in a month because no software is supported anymore. Please amazon, I believe you value your customers so please if your not going to give us the latest version at least give us a trade in program where we can get half price or something just don’t leave us out in the dust please!
Proudly posted from my kindle fire first gen (not so proud to be on 6.3.1 still)

OH YEAH! I mean ouya

I decided to preorder an ouya that will be coming in early or late 2013 I think but I think it will be worth the wait because of the design and portability. most people might say right away: “thats not portable!” but if you have a tv at your destination it is much more portable than the 360 or any other system at the moment, the last time I moved my xbox I needed 2 bags one to put the xbox and all the cords and another to put my computer in for looking stuff up. To some people it might  not seem like a hassle to carry it to a friends house for a lan party but when your friend also wants computer help it gets annoying. But enough about the size it also runs the Android operating system and is open for development of the system and games (which would get you banned from xbox live) this will bring alot of cheaters to the table but also make a far reaching community to help with making it better and a hacker community to play with everything that they can. Really what they are doing is bringing open source efficiency to your tv so it is a great Idea!

A Time for Regret

I’m 19 years old and have almost nothing to regret because I have got decent grades in school and now have a job and am going to college  in California but food is my regret. My mom, Grandma and Great Aunt all have Diabetes but I have still eaten things I like all my life thus far and found out today that I have High blood Pressure, though the one you normally look at is in normal limits my other is way too high.

There are other causes of high blood pressure but I am fairly sure that it has to be this one because I’ve been eating crappy food for way too long and though I enjoy that crappy food (not really but it is convenient) I am going to try to undo this mess by eating better and working out more.

Black and White Film

image

I love film, but why is digital better to most people? The answer can be that it’s a cheap hobby in digital form and quite the opposite with film. To get that picture I’ve used 3 rolls of film, almost 100 sheets of paper, this one I just scanned into the computer but it is more fun to use the enlarger.

I also can say that even though the supplies are expensive some of the equippment is cheap such as an SLR camera, I’ve bought 4 and all for under $20 each! It is easier to use and get a fairly good image out of a digital camera but it is so much of a hands off process. With digital you plug it into your computer and have great images to start while with film you have to try again and again until you get a perfect picture print on Rc paper, or you could always scan negatives into your computer in half the time.

Technology makes it easier to do things like photography and video editing but it isn’t always the best way to do it and in the same way even though a tablet is smaller and easier it does not mean that they are better than a laptop for everything, for instance, I use my laptop to edit images still. So think on this, what technologies that were made in our time will be considered out of date but still be used by students to learn how to use the new technology better?

Multitasking, good or bad?

I like multitasking on my computer, phone, and even my tablet but is it really helpful in real life? I do my math homework while I watch TV, until I get distracted, and have done well up until college. My first math class is not doing so well for me so I tried studying in the library but my kindle called to me from my backpack and I ended up watching hulu plus for 2 hours! Then Netflix for longer! So I need to figure put a new way of studying and leaving my kindle at home will still leave me tempted by my phone. Any ideas?

Rasberry Pi

I wish that I could say that I had already ordered one but they completely sold out before I even got a look at their selling site. They are “for sale” at Element 14 but the problem is they had so many orders that they ran out of stock!I did however, just today order one that will arrive this summer for a summer of code (I’m a geek, I want to learn coding over the summer) and also in time for some other things like my dads birthday. I might pass it along to him after I get it set up so that he can use it for his radio stuff since he is into ham radio and this is a perfect device since it can run off of AAs if he needed it to. Now, the cool thing about them is that they are small but that is also annoying because if you were to try making a case for it the ports are all over the map! So, why make it so hard to case? Well they made it mostly for cost and size, when you try to make a smaller computer one thing you have to consider is less room for connectors. The first prototype build was much smaller than the current one but it only had a HDMI and a usb port meaning that it was very limited in attachments and many people wouldn’t have much to do with it because without wifi and no ethernet you would have to buy a usb wireless card, which I’m not sure could even be powered by the device. So they changed it to support older tv’s for poorer families by putting an RCA output and added an ethernet port for functionality. This might be a good system in your car for a dash entertainment system or in your house as your child’s computer so that there is almost no way they can break it by loading software onto it and it is a cheap computer, about $44 with shipping, so it is a good computer to practice. If you get model B you get more functionality but some of you might just want a base model A for playing around with. I got the model B because I want to try using it as a desktop for a couple of weeks and that is the  best way to do it but they have updated that both have the same processing power and the main difference are the ports available so that means that if you don’t ever use or intend to use and ethernet port you might be better getting the model A with a USB hub and a USB wifi adaptor.

I hope you found me amusing talking about the Rasberry Pi hopefully they will send it before it said it would ship.
